about
While filming a documentary on organs in the great cathedrals of France, I took the opportunity to sing melodic phrases from a mass by Josquin in several of the cathedrals we visited. I became enraptured by the soundworld that emerged from this odd 'solo polyphony' in such a vast sonic space. Winter Mass takes inspiration from this experience. The entirety of the piece is built from processed permutations of one sound sample: an e-bowed guitar performing a chant melody. Like a cyclic mass, this melody is not at first apparent but as the polyphony evolves, it finally emerges, spreading out in the sonic space much like my voice echoing off the stones of the cathedrals.

A work of beautiful, pointillist guitar from Martyn Heyne, the moving songs on “Electric Intervals” are made of tiny pinpricks of sound. Bandcamp New & Notable Nov 11, 2017
